Have you identified your ideal client yet?
In the early days of starting your business, it can be really easy to try and target anyone and everyone, in the hope that if you throw enough mud, something will stick. (As the saying goes) This is not a huge issue, whilst you're finding your feet, but it can be a huge mistake when you are looking to grow and build your client base. The fact of the matter is, you will never be able to please everyone. Learn about your ideal client quickly - learn all that you can about why they are your ideal client and put your focus on targeting those lovely people.
Target the right audience and bringing in business will be so much easier because you'll speak their language, you'll lose the audience that is never going to invest in your products and services and more importantly, you'll enjoy your business all the more, without the need to please everyone that comes your way. Don't waste your resources on those that won't value the great work you do or the great products you offer.
Here are some ways we suggest to get started on identifying that ideal client, but it all begins with you:
Who do you enjoy working with and why?
What are the common problems you solve?
Who are your competitors?
Why do your existing clients use you?
Who is paying you well and appreciating your services most?
What is unique about you and your business?
Do you have a niche service for a niche client base?
What are the main frustrations your clients have that you help eliminate?
Make an effort to really get to know your existing clients, what are their demographics, where do they hang out? Which Social Media Channels are they active on? Eventually, you'll start to see a pattern that you can use. We chose to give our target client a name and a story - be really specific. Build a clear picture in your mind of who they are and create a plan to market and sell to them.
Knowing your customer will save you time, money and energy - the three resources every start-up or growing business needs more of!
